  Stenosia

Please note that the road from Pylos to Kalamata is currently closed, so you will need to find other roads to get to Stenosia.
Google Maps gives different directions depending on where you are starting from.

This year we have to change the route to the Stenosia waterfalls.
The heavy winter rains have caused the vegetation to grow profusely and there are several sections where we have to cross streams. At one point it is no longer possible to continue the full circuit because the vegetation with its branches and bamboo is so dense that the path has become impassable.
So we will go as far as the first waterfall, where we will have our banana break, and then return along the same route.
The good news are that it is particularly impressive that the water flow is so rich.
In recent years we have always seen this waterfall dry and parched but now it is a real spectacle.
The trail conditions are, however, very challenging, with sections crossing very slippery streams. The return trip is about 4.5 km all uphill and very steep in some points and almost everywhere without shadow.
This walk therefore requires good physical shape, suitable footwear (no sandals or flip-flops) and excellent balance to cross the slippery streams.
For safety reasons and to fully enjoy this walk, these three conditions are essential.
At the end of the walk, we will meet up at a Kafenion in Stenosiá to toast the completion of this adventure.

The chronicle of today

Today’s walk was particularly challenging, and only seven Freewalkers turned up at the meeting point to tackle the 10 km route.
We made it as far as the first waterfall where we had our banana break.
It presented a marvellous sight with plenty of water thanks to the heavy winter rains.
We then wanted to see if the path had been cleared to reach the second waterfalls since our last inspection, but unfortunately nothing had been done, so we returned along the same route as planned.
The fantastic spectacle that greeted us at the first waterfall was well worth the effort, however.
At the end, we met up for a drink together at a café in the village of Stenosiá.
See you next Saturday, 20th of June, at 9 am in Finikounda at the car park in front of the Finikes campingsite close to Paradise Resort.
